Car insurance costs can be high, especially for young or inexperienced drivers. The Driving Standards Agency's Pass Plus scheme can cut car insurance costs.

Choosing the right kind of car insurance is vital. It is important to make sure that both the driver and the vehicle are covered. But, it's also key to try and keep costs at reasonable levels. Shopping around for quotes can help here. Looking for ways to encourage insurers to charge less is also a good thing to do. The Pass Plus driving test may help.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is basically a specially designed driving course that has been set up by:

  • The Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
  • The insurance sector
  • The driving instruction sector

This is not a replacement for the standard driving test but can be taken by anyone who holds a valid UK driving license. The Pass Plus scheme involves an intensive set of training modules that help drivers learn the skills that they need to become better, more confident and safer drivers. The scheme does not involve a test or an exam at the end- participants are monitored on a continuous assessment basis as they pass through each module and passed or failed as they go along.

What Does Pass Plus Teach a Driver?

The six modules in a Pass Plus course involve:

  • Driving in a town
  • Driving out of town
  • Driving on a dual carriageway
  • Driving on a motorway
  • Driving at night
  • Driving in all weathers

What are the Advantages of Taking a Pass Plus Course?

Pass Plus is designed to simply work on core driving skills and to make any driver safer and more confident in a variety of situations. This scheme can be beneficial for many reasons. It can, for example:

  • Help young or inexperienced drivers gain necessary driving experience and confidence
  • Help drivers learn how to drive in conditions or situations that they may not yet have experienced
  • Help drivers learn the skills necessary to avoid accidents
  • Help cut the costs of insurance- many insurance companies will charge lower premiums if drivers have successfully completed a Pass Plus course with accredited driving schools

The Pass Plus insurance cost benefits alone can make this worth considering. A driver who has passed this course will appear 'safer' to an insurer. This could significantly reduce their insurance costs. Many drivers normally perceived as being high risk (i.e. young or inexperienced drivers) may benefit here.

Who Runs Pass Plus Courses and is There a Charge?

Pass Plus courses are run by specific driving schools who are registered to run the scheme. All will charge a fee for the course. Many drivers, however, will find that the cost here will be paid for (at least in part and often in total) by the insurance discounts that they are subsequently given. Some local councils also offer discounts on the Pass Plus scheme to their residents which could cover up to 50% of the course costs.
